Description

Diflucan 50mg Capsule contains Fluconazole, a triazole antifungal medication used to treat various fungal infections. This broad-spectrum antifungal effectively treats yeast infections, thrush, cryptococcal meningitis, and prevents fungal infections in immunocompromised patients.

Uses

Diflucan treats vaginal yeast infections, oral thrush, esophageal candidiasis, and systemic fungal infections. It’s used for cryptococcal meningitis, urinary tract fungal infections, and prevention of candidiasis in cancer patients. Diflucan is also prescribed for skin fungal infections and chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis.

Benefits

  • Provides broad-spectrum antifungal activity
  • Effective against resistant Candida species
  • Single-dose treatment for vaginal yeast infections
  • Good penetration into body tissues and fluids
  • Oral administration with excellent bioavailability
  • Fewer drug interactions than other azole antifungals
  • Well-tolerated with minimal side effects
  • Suitable for both treatment and prevention
  • Effective in immunocompromised patients

How It Works

Diflucan inhibits cytochrome P450 enzyme 14α-demethylase in fungal cells, preventing ergosterol synthesis. This disrupts fungal cell membrane formation, leading to cell death. Its selective action on fungal enzymes minimizes effects on human cells while maintaining potent antifungal activity.

Dosage

Condition Dosage Duration
Vaginal Candidiasis 150mg single dose 1 day
Oral Thrush 50-100mg daily 7-14 days
Systemic Infections 200-800mg daily Variable

Take Diflucan with or without food. Swallow capsules whole with water. Dosage may require adjustment in kidney impairment.

Duration of Action

Diflucan begins working within hours of administration with peak concentrations reached in 1-2 hours. Its long half-life allows once-daily dosing. Symptoms typically improve within 24-48 hours, though complete cure may take several days to weeks depending on infection severity.

Side Effects

Most patients tolerate Diflucan well. Common side effects include nausea, headache, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Some experience dizziness, skin rash, or taste changes. Serious but rare effects include liver toxicity, severe skin reactions, or QT prolongation.

Warning

Diflucan may cause rare but serious liver damage, particularly with prolonged use or high doses. Monitor liver function in patients receiving extended treatment. May prolong QT interval leading to cardiac arrhythmias. Discontinue if severe skin reactions or signs of liver toxicity develop.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Single-dose Diflucan for vaginal yeast infections is considered safe during pregnancy. High-dose or prolonged therapy should be avoided due to potential teratogenic effects. Diflucan passes into breast milk but is generally considered compatible with breastfeeding for short-term use.

Interaction

  • May increase levels of warfarin, requiring dose adjustment
  • Possible interaction with certain diabetes medications
  • May enhance effects of some seizure medications
  • Potential increased toxicity with certain immunosuppressants
  • Could interact with some cholesterol-lowering medications

Precaution

Use cautiously in patients with liver disease, kidney impairment, or cardiac conditions. Monitor liver enzymes during prolonged treatment. Patients with known QT prolongation or taking medications affecting heart rhythm require careful monitoring. Avoid in those with previous severe reactions to azole antifungals.

Important Information

Diflucan is a prescription antifungal requiring proper diagnosis of fungal infection before use. Complete the full course even if symptoms improve early. Contact healthcare provider if symptoms worsen or new symptoms develop. Store at room temperature in original container. This medication does not treat bacterial or viral infections.
